Now Jonah heard God calling him to bring a message of repentance to his enemies, the people of Nineveh. His response was to run in the opposite direction refusing to love his enemies. He was swallowed by a fish, spewed out onto the beach, and had a change of mind, but not of heart. He went to Nineveh and did as God commanded but then he went up on the hill to watch God destroy the city, but it did not happen. The Ninevites repented and God relented.
On the other hand the Peter, Andrew, James and John heard the Lord’s call to cease being fishermen and become fishers of men. They dropped everything: jobs and family, and became Christ’s obedient and faithful servants.
We too are called by God to follow him. We are called in different ways, but whatever way he calls us we are to do it unreservedly and without hesitation. For some this is as extreme as leaving family and work, but for others it is embracing one’s lover and starting a family. To whatever God calls us we need to do it with love for God and not for love of ourselves.
Pax Christi, Fr. Paul

Archbishop’s Annual Appeal --- Making a Difference
Individuals and families living with disabilities, particularly developmental disabilities, often feel at the margins of parish life. They also typically have additional struggles concerning their relationship with God, world, church, and school systems. The Archdiocesan Department of Pastoral Ministry with Persons with Disabilities works to build structures of support at the parish level to address this special group. The department seeks to affirm the Baptism of people with disabilities, acknowledging their call to participate in the life and mission of the Church, to the extent that each person desires and is able. This includes catechesis and faith formation, the sacramental life of the Church, evangelization, outreach and pastoral ministry.
Last year, with the help of this department, 112 parishes in the Archdiocese offered catechesis for individuals with disabilities. It also promotes faith-based support for mothers and fathers, Inclusive Family Masses and has worked directly and indirectly with more than 500 families over the past few years.
Thank you for your support of the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal, which helps bring to reality the experience of welcome and affirmation for individuals and families living with disabilities in the Archdiocese of Newark.

“Love is a fruit, in season at all times and within the reach of every hand. Anyone may gather it and no limit is set. Everyone can reach this love through meditation, the spirit of prayer, and sacrifice.”

A Prayer for Our Troops
Almighty and eternal God,
those who take refuge in you will be glad
and forever will shout for joy.
Protect our soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm.
May the power of your love enable them to return home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise you for your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord

HOLY HOUR for LIFE
On January 23, 2012 we will be having a Holy Hour for Life after the 12:10 PM Mass in the chapel. Please come a pray with us for the end of this national tragedy. We will pray for those mothers and fathers who aborted their children, we will beg forgiveness for the clinicians who perform abortions and we will pray for he conversion of heart and mind of our lawmakers to the truth that abortion murders a human child.
National Day of Penance
January 23 is a Day of Penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion, and of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life.
There are multiple ways of observing this national day of prayer and penance. Of course, as noted above, the Mass for Peace and Justice is to be celebrated on the day of prayer and penance. However, there are many actions in which individuals and groups can engage to observe the day:
• Peacefully praying outside of an abortion clinic
• Fasting
• Praying a rosary for the unborn
• Praying for those who have been wounded by abortion and those who perform abortions
• Visiting and praying before the Blessed Sacrament
• Reading and reflecting on Pope John Paul II’s Evangelium Vitae in full
• Becoming involved with the pro-life group in the parish
Rachel’s Vineyard Retreats
for men and women hurt by abortion are held at St. John the Apostle McGuinness Center in Linden twice a year. Call the Respect Life office for more info at 732-388-8211. Registration is necessary. Space is limited.
SPIRITUAL ADOPTION
On January 28-29, 2012 we will begin Spiritual Adoption of unborn children in danger of being terminated in their mother’s womb. To help stop the anti-life push around the world, the late Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen encouraged the spiritual adoption of an unborn child. This is done by praying that the one particular but unknown child’s life be spared abortion and be allowed to continue to live.
To help accomplish this, it was recommended an individual say the following daily prayer for a period of nine months.
“Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of [baby’s name] the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.”
Prayer of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen
Our prayers CAN make a difference between whether a baby will be born...or aborted. Our prayers are also a spiritual support for both of the parents. Please share the love of life given to you by the Lord of all life and join in spiritually adopting a baby.
At the end of nine months we will donate baby gifts to one of our local pregnancy crisis centers.

The CONVERSION of SAINT PAUL Apostle to the Gentiles (A.D. 36)
The great Apostle Paul, named Saul at his circumcision, was born in Tarsus, the capital of Cilicia, and was by that privilege a Roman citizen, to which quality a great distinction and several exemptions were granted by the laws of the Empire. He was early instructed in the strict observance of the Mosaic law, and lived up to it in the most scrupulous manner. In his zeal for the Jewish law, which he believed to be the divine Cause of God, he became a violent persecutor of the Christians. He was one of those who combined to murder Saint Stephen, and then he presided in the violent persecution of the faithful which followed the holy deacon’s martyrdom. By virtue of the power he had received from the high priest, he dragged the Christians out of their houses, loaded them with chains, and thrust them into prison. In the fury of his zeal he applied for a commission to seize in Damascus all Jews who confessed Jesus Christ, and to bring them in bonds to Jerusalem, that they might serve as examples for the others.
But God was pleased to manifest in him His patience and mercy. While Saul was journeying to Damascus, he and his party were surrounded by a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, and suddenly the chief was struck to the ground. And then a voice was heard saying, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me?” And Saul answered, “Who art Thou, Lord?” and the voice replied, “I am Jesus, whom you persecute.” This mild admonition of Our Redeemer, accompanied with a powerful interior grace, cured Saul’s pride, assuaged his rage, and wrought at once a total change in him. Therefore, trembling and astonished, he cried out, “Lord, what wilt Thou have me do?” Our Lord ordered him to proceed on his way to the city of Damascus, where he would be informed of what was expected of him. Saul, arising from the ground, found that although his eyes were open, he saw nothing.
He was led into the city, where he was lodged in the house of a Christian named Judas. To this house came by divine appointment a holy man named Ananias, who, laying his hands on Saul, said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on your journey, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Ghost.” Immediately something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he recovered his sight; then he arose and was baptized. He stayed a few days with the disciples at Damascus, and began immediately to preach in the synagogues that Jesus was the Son of God. Thus a blasphemer and a persecutor was made an Apostle, and chosen as one of God’s principal instruments in the conversion of the world.
Reflection. Listen to the words of The Imitation of Christ, and let them sink into your heart: “He who would keep the grace of God, let him be grateful for grace when it is given, and patient when it is taken away. Let him pray that it may be given back to him, and be careful and humble, lest he lose it.”

Help Wanted
On more than one occasion parishioners have told me that they are out of work and have asked if I heard of any available jobs. I have posted openings from the archdiocese from time to time, but now I would like to create a Help Wanted and Job Needed Bulletin Board at the front doors of the Church. Here one can post job openings from parishioners looking for help and also parishioners can post their need for work. I only ask that all postings be dated and removed when filled.
