Bulletin - Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time - February 7, 2010 - page 1

“Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.” In our lives we work hard and of course expect many blessings in our lives because of it. But that is not always the fact. Many have worked hard their whole lives and have little to show for it. See what happened to the apostles. They worked hard all night and caught nothing, but then Jesus comes along and tells them to try again. Skeptical but obediently they follow his command and they catch loads of fish. How happy they are. Sometimes it is not how hard we work but rather how obedient we are to our Lord. We can do all sorts of prayers, attend Mass 3x a day, say every novena there is, but if we live lives contrary to the Gospel of Love and forgiveness, if we persist in our sins and immoral acts, then all our hard work is meaningless. When St. Peter realized Jesus was the Messiah, he acknowledged his sinfulness and repented. Now his hard work will begin as he catches men for the kingdom of God.

Respect Life: "I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly. " (John 10:10)

Spiritual Adoption
"...each according to his or her possibilities, profession and responsibilities, should feel in themselves an obligation to love and serve life, from its beginning to its natural end. It is, in fact, everyone's duty to welcome human life as a gift to be respected, protected and promoted, even more so when it is fragile and in need of attention and care, either before birth or when it is in its final stages."

~ Pope Benedict XVI, Welcome Life, Before Birth and in its Final Stages, February 3, 2008 ~

Our babies: Watch me grow!
2 weeks old: The child, now in the mother’s womb, begins producing hCG hormone, which may allow the mother to detect she is pregnant. The brain, backbone, and the cardio-vascular system – complete with a beating heart are beginning to form!  Because the heartbeat is present before an abortion can be done, abortion always stops a beating heart.

Your prayers CAN make a difference between whether a baby will be born...or aborted. Our prayers can also be a form of spiritual support for both of the parents. Please pray the following prayer daily:

“Jesus, Mary and Joseph, I love you very much. I beg you to spare the life of [baby’s name] the unborn baby that I have spiritually adopted who is in danger of abortion.” - Prayer of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen In his hand is the soul of every living thing, and the life breath of all mankind. Job 12:10

In the Catechism
I BELIEVE IN GOD THE FATHER, THE SYMBOLS OF FAITH
What are the symbols of faith?
The symbols of faith are composite formulas, also called “professions of faith” or “Creeds”, with which the Church from her very beginning has set forth synthetically and handed on her own faith in a language that is normative and common to all the faithful.

What are the most ancient symbols (professions) of faith?
The most ancient symbols of faith are the baptismal creeds. Because Baptism is conferred “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19), the truths of faith professed at Baptism are articulated in reference to the three Persons of the Most Holy Trinity.

What are the most important symbols of the faith?
They are the Apostles' Creed which is the ancient baptismal symbol of the Church of Rome and the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed which stems from the first two ecumenical Councils, that of Nicea (325 A.D.) and that of Constantinople (381 A.D.) and which even to this day are common to all the great Churches of the East and the West.

St. Jerome Emiliani whose feast day is February 8, cared for the sick, and housed orphans in his own home. At night he roamed the streets, burying those who had collapsed and died unattended. He contracted the fever himself, but survived. He founded six orphanages, a shelter for penitent prostitutes, and a hospital. He also founded the Order of Somaschi (Company of Servants of the Poor, or Somascan Fathers, or Regular Clergy of Somasca) c.1532, a congregation of clerks regular vowed to the care of orphans, and named after the town of Somasca where they started, and where they founded a seminary; the society was given approval by Pope Paul III in 1540, and continue their work today in a dozen countries. It is believed he developed the question-and-answer catechism technique for teaching children religion. He was declared the patron of orphans and abandoned children in 1928 by Pope Pius XI.
