PD’S REFLECTIONS
At one of the masses last weekend we sent off to of our parishioners, Nicole and Samantha Mascetti, as they head off to college. It is a reminder that summer is coming to an end and the school year will soon begin. Others will soon head to college, and high schools and grammar schools will follow. It still seems strange not to have our school across the street and see the teachers and administration busily getting ready for a new year.
While the calendar changes from year to year on January 1, it always seems to me that the real beginning of the new year is Labor Day. Perhaps that is because the rhythm of a school calendar influences the parish calendar as well. Also, the cool weather we had last week reminds us that the seasons are changing. And for some of us, the football season will soon begin and every team is undefeated with high hopes of a championship. And the basketball and hockey seasons are not far away and of course there is the world series to look forward to.
It seems helpful along the journey in life to have new beginnings. Just as folks make resolutions at New Year’s, it is useful to make plans as we begin this year. One of the first things that many teachers assign to their students when they return to class is an essay of how they spend their summer vacation. Another step at the beginning of the semester would be to outline goals for the year. Sometimes life can be continuing to do the same things year after year. While that may make us feel comfortable, the world around us changes and our situation in life changes so it is often better for us to begin anew
and make changes.
A parish can be busy with the large task of maintaining what has always been and decreasing resources and personnel make that challenging enough. The Gospel calls us to be people of mission, to spread the good news, to seek new ways of sharing the word, building community and serving the community. Next weekend will be Labor Day, the transition for many from one season to the next. May the new year be blessed.
May we reflect on the past but be led by the vision of the future that God is placing in our hearts.
Fr. Pat

ADORATION for YOUTH
“In life today, which is often noisy and scattered, it is more important than ever to recover the capacity for interior silence and recollection: Eucharistic Adoration permits one to do this not only within one’s ‘I’ but rather in company of that ‘You’ full of love who is Jesus Christ, ‘the God who is near us.’” Pope Benedict XVI
You are invited to Holy Ground, a time of Eucharistic Adoration that includes Evening Prayer of the Church to the sounds of contemporary Christian music. Holy Ground will be held on the last Saturday of every month at 7:30 PM at the Sacred Heart Church Chapel at the Archdiocesan Retreat Center in Kearny, NJ. CHURCH MINISTRY: IT'S NOT JUST FOR PROFESSIONALS
The Lord Jesus, through the Church, calls all the baptized to continue his mission. Ministry is not limited to priests, deacons and religious; all of God's people can and should be engaged in the work of the Church. Christian Foundations for Ministry (CFM) is a program that provides the knowledge and tools necessary to share your faith through the various ministries of your parish. CFM consists of 9 eight-week courses over three years which will give you the basics about Scripture, Liturgy, Church History and Evangelization. The cost is minimal ($50/course; some parishes offer full or partial scholarships), the experience priceless. For more information, please contact Fr. Mitch Walters, Director of the Center for Ministerial Development at (973) 497-4350 or waltermi@rcan.org. Classes begin in October.
Save The Date
The Spiritual Life Committee will again be sponsoring a, Morning of Reflection on 9-25-10 in the Church Hall. Our presenter will be Fr. Donald Hummel, Director of Continuing Education and Formation of Priests for Archdioceses of Newark. His topic will be “Were Do We Find God and Where Does God Find Us.” More details to follow.

CALLING ALL SINGERS!
Adult choir rehearsals will resume on Wednesday evening, September 15th at 7:30 in the choir loft. All are welcome, especially new singers.
In the Catechism the Seven Sacraments of the Church
The seven sacraments are:
Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Eucharist, Penance, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, Matrimony
How are the sacraments of the Church divided?
The sacraments are divided into: the sacraments of Christian initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Eucharist); the sacraments of healing (Penance and Anointing of the Sick);, and the sacraments at the service of communion and mission (Holy Orders and Matrimony). The sacraments touch all the important moments of Christian life. All of the sacraments are ordered to the Holy Eucharist “as to their end” (Saint Thomas Aquinas).
The sacraments of Christian initiation
How is Christian initiation brought about?
Christian initiation is accomplished by means of the sacraments which establish the foundations of Christian life. The faithful born anew by Baptism are strengthened by Confirmation and are then nourished by the Eucharist.
THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
What names are given to the first sacrament of initiation?
This sacrament is primarily called Baptism because of the central rite with which it is celebrated. To baptize means to “immerse” in water. The one who is baptized is immersed into the death of Christ and rises with him as a “new creature” (2 Corinthians 5:17). This sacrament is also called the “bath of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit” (Titus 3:5); and it is called “enlightenment” because the baptized becomes “a son of light” (Ephesians 5:8).
How is Baptism prefigured in the Old Covenant?
In the Old Covenant Baptism was pre-figured in various ways: water, seen as source of life and of death; in the Ark of Noah, which saved by means of water; in the passing through the Red Sea, which liberated Israel from Egyptian slavery; in the crossing of the Jordan River, that brought Israel into the promised land which is the image of eternal life.
Who brought to fulfillment those prefigurations?
All the Old Covenant prefigurations find their fulfillment in Jesus Christ. At the beginning of his public life Jesus had himself baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan. On the cross, blood and water, signs of Baptism and the Eucharist, flowed from his pierced side. After his Resurrection he gave to his apostles this mission: “Go forth and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 28:19).
Starting when and to whom has the Church administered Baptism?
From the day of Pentecost, the Church has administered Baptism to anyone who believes in Jesus Christ.
In what does the essential rite of Baptism consist?
The essential rite of this sacrament consists in immersing the candidate in water or pouring water over his or her head while invoking the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.
Who can receive Baptism?
Every person not yet baptized is able to receive Baptism.
Why does the Church baptize infants?
The Church baptizes infants because they are born with original sin. They need to be freed from the power of the Evil One and brought into that realm of freedom which belongs to the children of God.

SESQUICENTENNIAL DECK OF PLAYING CARDS
As you know Holy Trinity will celebrate its 150th Anniversary in 2011 (1861-2011).
We are creating a deck of playing cards with historical pictures on the face side and a picture of Holy Trinity Church on the back.
This deck offers a unique opportunity for the parishioners to get involved and will be a fund raiser for the church. All 54 of the card faces may be sponsored by anyone who is interested. Individuals may want to put “In Memory of…” or “Sponsored By ….” or maybe “In Honor of...around the edge of the picture on the face side.
Businesses may want to support the project by listing their name and phone number around the edge of the photo. In addition to text sponsorship, four businesses may want to list their company logo, name, phone number or even a website on one of the trivia cards included in the deck. The sponsorships vary in price from$50 to $250.
COST OF SPONSORSHIP
The two through ten of each suit will be $50.00
The court cards (Jack, Queen and King) of each suit are $125.00
The two Jokers/Wild Cards are $125.00
The Aces in each suit are $200.00
Each side of the two Trivia Cards for Business Ads is $250.00.
Sample pictures are posted on the bulletin board. You will sign up for a specific card as listed above, but not a specific photo. Images shown on the sample may or may not be shown on that particular card when we go to print. After the deck is printed it will sell for $10.00 each.
You may secure a form from the desk in the vestibule or by going to the rectory. Please return the completed forms along with your check to Joan Manahan at the desk in the vestibule, and she will tell you if the selected card is available. If not, you may then make a different selection. The sooner you return the form and check the better chance you have of getting the card you want. You may also return the form and check to the rectory or put it in an envelope and place it in the collection basket.
For more information contact Dr. Joan Manahan at 201-562-0193.
